Crime Sector Forum meeting update for 29 May 2008

How to drive into your property

Trevor Maher welcomed a reasonable turnout on Thursday evening. This is what was discussed.
Crime stats are pretty static and while the Fairland Police constantly aim for zero crime, the numbers of incidents are low. Most categories numbered between three and five incidents for the month. Perhaps more encouraging, they seem to be opportunistic. As Trevor pointed out, opportunistic crime means that it can be under our control - we can prevent this from happening to us with some common sense and awareness.

So this is what can be done:

Lock garden implements, tools and ladders away - these are being used to gain entry to homes
Make sure you have adequate lighting, particularly in lush gardens
Make sure your street number is visible
Ensure that your sliding gate has an anti-lift bracket - thieves simply lift the gate off the rails to get onto your property
Watch out for refuse collection days when we or our employees wheel the bins out onto the street - don't dawdle out there and make sure you can close the gate behind you
Be particularly aware and alert at driveways (see our guide on how to enter your driveway) - don't talk on your cell phone
Don't leave valuables such as handbags and laptops on the seat or in view - there are still some reports of smash and grab on 9th Ave
Fit 200 micron film to your car windows
Secure your typically unsecured points of access. These are usually kitchen, bathroom and loo windows

Cars to watch out for:
white Toyota Conquest
Black Ford Fiesta
Nissan 1-ton Bakkie
White Citi Golf
Red Golf 5 Gti
Caravelle Combi
White Opel Corsa

Please note that Fairland Police have said again that they are more than happy to come to your house and do a quick audit on your security and make soem recommendations on how to secure your home. For free, gratis and nothing.
