Crime seems to be on the up
In the absence of crime statistics from official channels, we can only give some idea of incidents that security companies respond to. This naturally cannot be the basis for intensive analysis of crime trends or statistics, but gives us an idea of how many incidents are being attended to.
Our friends at Beagle Watch have been responding to more incidents. Have a look at the attached graph to get an idea of the increase they are experiencing.
Dear Neighbours
As you know, the crime statistics for the year ended 31 March 2009 have now been released to the public. These are available in some detail on www.saps.gov.za
Overall, the ones for Sophiatown Police Station show decreases in nearly all categories of crime with few exceptions, two of which are - burglaries at business premises which has risen alarmingly from 55 last year to 94 this year and drug related crimes (from 87 to 151 this year).
Whilst the members of Sophiatown Police are to be congratulated on the overall reduction of crime by 12 per cent, the total number of crimes committed this year (5520) is still far too high. The detailed analysis of these crimes continues to be of major concern.
It must be noted that the Sophiatown Precinct covers 23 suburbs and that the socio-economic profiles of these suburbs vary from purely residential to industrial, factories and retail. The nature of the crimes also differs from area to area.
Our community must get involved in the fight against crime. I appeal to each and every resident to unite with the Police to prevent crime.
Together we can each make a small difference by taking charge of the neighbourhood in which we live.
Come to the Annual General Meeting of the Sophiatown Policing Forum (Sector 5) to have an in depth discussion on what we can do as individuals and groups to make our neighbourhood a safer place to live in.
All residents of Albertskroon, Greymont, Waterval Estate, East Town, Northcliff, and Northcliff Ridge and Water Tower area are invited to attend the Annual General Meeting of the Sophiatown Policing Forum (Sector) which is to be held at the Dutch Reformed Church, 2nd Road / 4th Street, Greymont on Monday 19 October 2009 at 19:00.
