Recycling changes in Northcliff

This only applies to suburbs in the Waterval Depot Recycling Pilot Programme that has been operating for the past two years. If you have no idea what I am talking about, then it is likely that you are not part of the separation at source pilot scheme.

I started receiving complaints from residents about the non-collection of the clear plastic recycling bags. The reason is that Pikitup have taken over their collection as the 2 year contract with the previous collector had expired. So now Pikitup collects all the recyclable material except the orange Mondi/Mpact bags.

However, Pikitup are still hampered by fleet problems and they are struggling to provide the extra collection vehicles to collect the recycling bags. They will usually have to return the day after the scheduled dates to collect what they didn't manage the day before.

This initial pilot scheme will be rolled out into three townships, but not into any more suburbs. At the moment only 7% of trash is recycled in the city and the Waterval Pilot Scheme has achieved around a 35% take up (ie 35% of households are recycling). It is likely that in the near future ALL households will have to start separating at source and each suburb will be responsible for setting up their own recycling collections. The large 240l bins will also be replaced by 130l bins to encourage recycling.
