Northcliff Sector 5 Community Policing Forum

FORTHCOMING ELECTIONS – SOPHIATOWN POLICING FORUM
Submitted by Northcliff Sector5 on Tue, 07/07/2009 - 09:03.
Community Policing is covered under our Constitution as well as the South African Police Services Act 68 of 1995. The stated purpose of Community Policing Forums is to improve communications between SAPS and the community, to promote crime prevention and transparency as well as to foster joint problem-solving and co-operation in order to improve the rendering of services by SAPS.

As a community we appear to be of one voice: our crime levels are unacceptable. We have no shortage of people expressing their outrage in the press, by email or even at dinner parties. And yet, as a nation, we appear to have very little respect for the law ourselves.

Community Policing start with you. Be in a position to hold your service providers accountable and responsible for the services which they provide to you.

Get to know your community, even if it is only the street you live in. Make sure that your residents’ association is represented on the Community Policing Forum. Does your area have a safety plan? Do you know what it entails? Does your service provider liaise with SAPS? Did you know that SAPS, Metro Police, private security companies and Ward Councilors attend Community Policing Forum and Sector Forum meetings? You can make more progress talking to these people rather than complaining at a braai.

We need to be more organised than our criminal counterparts. To do this we adapt our attitudes and network within our community to make a noticeable difference to the crime rate.

Come to the Annual General Meeting of your Sector and discuss these issues with the Sophiatown Station Commissioner, Dir. Pitout, the Metro Police and your Ward Councillor.

Stand for election for your Sector, join the Community Policing Forum and together we can make a difference.

NEUTRALIZE CRIME ACTIVELY
The NCA is a proactive asset protection device which is aimed at keeping intruders at bay.
The system is mobile and can be setup anywhere in a risk area. It can be activated via a remote control or cell phone. A simple phone call from a pre assigned cell phone arms or disarms the system. The NCA notifies the user via a SMS as to what its status is.
The unit has a built in UPS in case of power failures, which is capable of supplying power to the unit for up to three days.
NCA looks like a desktop computer. The reason for this is that it will attract the intention of any intruder. Once the unit is armed it keeps constant watch over the room using an internal passive sensor.
If the NCA detects movement it sprays a 30 second blast of Chilli gas up to 3 meters into the room and simultaneously notifies you via SMS that there is someone in your office. This dissipates in seconds filling the entire room with Chilli gas and makes it impossible for anybody to enter the room for sometime there after depending on the air flow in the room.
One and a half minutes after the initial spray the unit begins to monitor the room for further movement.
